TRANSCRIPT:
Today's video is a brief introduction to international relations.
Talking about international relations, the inevitable question is: what is world politics?
A simple answer that I got from you guys last year was: relationships with different countries involved instead of different people.
This kind of understanding is known as realism. Realists believe that states are the only important actors in international relations. Here we will mainly look at things from a liberal perspective.
International relationships cannot be explained in isolation. A lot of other actors are closely involved. Such as international organizations, multinational corporations, and of course, individuals. Together they form what we know as world politics.
The definition of world politics is, the set of interactions among states, international organizations, multinational corporations, and individuals, resulting in the creation, distribution, and use of power and wealth.
These interactions are separated into two main groups, bargaining and cooperation.
Bargaining describes an interaction in which actors choose an outcome that leaves one party better off
at the expense of the other. This usually happens when the resources at hand is a zero-sum commodity. Meaning if one party gets more, the other gets less. One of the most commonly discussed zero-sum is security or of course a pizza that a group of friends are fighting over.
Cooperation describes an interaction in which actors choose an outcome that leaves at least one party better off and the other actors not worse off.
